Chise was an overworked office worker who absolutely adored animals. Unfortunately, severe allergies meant she could never actually pet the fluffy creatures she loved so much. Then one day, she dies after protecting a cat from an oncoming truck. Impressed by her final act of kindness, a god offers Chise the opportunity to reincarnate in another world. When asked what she wants from her second life, her answer is simple: she wants to spend it surrounded by as many fluffy animals as possible. Her wish is granted, perhaps a little too literally. Reincarnated as an adorable cat-eared beastkin girl, Chise settles into a secluded atelier in the forest and begins pursuing her ideal slow life.

With skills for taming and spirit summoning, knowledge of medicine-making, and companions including a slime, Cait Sith and other beastfolk, she finally gets the peaceful, fluffy existence she always dreamed about. Or at least, that's the plan. The medicines Chise casually creates turn out to be absurdly effective. Before long she's saving villages from monsters, attracting increasingly unusual companions, and getting dragged into events far beyond the quiet life of an ordinary forest apothecary. Then there's Al, a dragon boy Chise gradually becomes close to, who turns out to be considerably more important than she realized. He's actually a prince, and Chise herself may have a rather important destiny waiting for her as well. Chise asked the gods for fluffy animals and a peaceful life in the woods. Becoming involved with princes, dragons, saints and world-changing events was definitely not part of the order.
