It has been six months since Yoshiki Tsujinaka's best friend, Hikaru Indou, went missing in the mountains and returned a week later with no recollection of what had transpired. Certain that it is not the Hikaru he knows who came back, Yoshiki finally asks Hikaru about it. Suddenly, "Hikaru" reveals his true monstrous form and begs Yoshiki to keep it a secret, as he does not want to kill him.
Despite his paranormal nature, "Hikaru" seems almost innocent, full of childlike wonder and eager to experience the summer heat, the countryside, and all kinds of other things in a human body for the first time. And for Yoshiki, it matters little if "Hikaru" is a fake relying on stolen memories—as long as he never leaves again. As Yoshiki desperately clings to "Hikaru" in his intense grief, it becomes increasingly clear that something dangerous and supernatural may have descended from the mountains into their village.
While everyone else attends the school assembly, Asako finds Hikaru wandering the halls; alone at the beach, Hikaru reveals his final plans to Yoshiki.
Kurebayashi shares her knowledge about impurities with the boys. Later, the elder Takeda loses his temper over Hikaru's ignorance of the Indo's history.
Yoshiki and Hikaru investigate Nonuki-sama and its link to Kubitachi's history; while at the library, they get an important lead from a surprising source.
After a sobering realisation, Yoshiki decides to invite Hikaru to skip school together. Will Hikaru agree? What is Yoshiki's plan once they are outside? Is this the end of their friendship?
Hikaru goes to the Tsujinaka home to investigate after Yoshiki's sister sees an eerie clump of hair in the bathroom. However, things take a deadly turn.
While Yoshiki attends the summer festival with Hikaru, the village elders fret over the recent death and Tanaka ends up with more questions than answers.
While Yoshiki and Hikaru accompany their classmates to a creepy mountain trail, a mysterious man arrives at Kubitachi Village and begins investigating.
Yoshiki confronts Hikaru about his suspicions and discovers the terrifying truth; even though they try to live normally, eerie incidents begin to occur.
