Zeno and Silva defeat Chrollo, supposedly, but do not finish him off because of the call from Illumi who manages to kill the mafia dons. Having no client, the professional assassins have no reason to fight and just leave. Fake bodies of Chrollo and all other Phantom Troupe members are found, calming the mafia community, and the auction takes place as planned. Kurapika calms down a bit and meets with Gon, Killua and Leorio. In the last seconds of the episode, Hisoka sends a text message to Kurapika telling him the corpses are fake.

Some of the hired assassins battle Chrollo, but lose. Gon and Killua try to contact Kurapika. The Phantom Troupe advances, easily beating the Mafia forces.

Gon and Killua escape from Nobunaga. Killua tells Gon that Kurapika is the chain user. Neon runs away and is found by Chrollo Lucilfer, who pretends to be friendly to get her prophecy.

Gon and Killua are questioned about the chain user, but can't answer, unaware that it's Kurapika.

Gon, Killua and Leorio arrive where Nobunaga and Machi are to spy on them. Leorio, unable to use Zetsu to hide his aura, returns home, while Gon and Killua follow them, but get captured.

Leorio tries to help Gon buy Greed Island. They need 18.9 billion, so they go to a flea market and use Gyo to buy items with Nen.

Gon, Killua, and Leorio search with no results. Gon gets a loan of 100 million by pawning his Hunter License.

Kurapika contacts Light Nostrade and is put in charge after Dalzollene's death. Uvogin finds Kurapika alone with Neon with the others in another room. They decide to fight outside the city.

Kurapika captures Uvogin with his chains and runs away. Uvogin is left with Dalzollene and the others as Kurapika meets with Hisoka, who promised to give information on the Phantom Troupe

The Mafia attacks the Phantom Troupe, but Uvogin single-handedly defeats them. Kurapika, Melody, and the others watch the fight from afar.

Chrollo Lucilfer, the Phantom Troupe boss, gives orders to kill everyone at the underground auction.

Neon and her bodyguards arrive in Yorknew City. Neon can foretell the future, and Mafia members hire her to tell fortunes. In the marketplace, Gon runs into Leorio.

Gon and Killua leave Whale Island for Yorknew City. They gain more information about Greed Island from the Hunters' Website. They need a lot of money to buy the game.

Killua finds a JoyStation Console, and the card contains data for a game called Greed Island that can't be found on the Internet. Killua calls his brother, who doesn't have it, but provides information in exchange for the data on the card.

Kurapika, with five other Hunters, enter a mansion for work. Several fighters attack them. Kurapika discovers they are a Nen-based ability from an imposter and deduces who it is.

Gon and Killua set up a computer to use the internet. Mito tells Gon about his father Ging Freecss and hands him a mysterious box Ging left. Gon manages to open the box with his Nen and finds a ring, a tape, and a memory card.

Killua and Gon take a ship to Whale Island. On the way there, Killua struggles with memories of his older brother while trying to think about his future goals.

Kurapika's flashbacks tell how he passed his hidden Hunter exam and got his chains, what Nen type he has, and how he's changed.

Gon and Killua improve their Nen abilities and show it during matches with Gido and Riehlvelt. Wing tells Gon that he has passed the Hunter's Exam. Afterward, Gon and Killua venture to Whale Island.

After Gon's match, Killua wants to compete, eager to test his strength. Gido, Sadaso, and Riehlvelt kidnap Zushi to bribe Killua into forfeiting his matches so that they can win easily.

Gon and Hisoka continue their fight. Hisoka attaches "Bungee Gum" to Gon's face and pulls him in to punch.

Gon and Killua learn their types of Nen; Gon is an Enhancer, and Killua is a Transmuter. Gon fights Hisoka, getting a punch in and returning the badge Hisoka gave him during the exam. After that, Hisoka fights with his full power.

Gon is finally healed as he and Killua continue working on their Nen. Kurapika looks for work and is turned down. The Hunter Association agent tells him that if he can't see something invisible in the room, he's not ready for a job.

Gon and Killua make it past Hisoka's Ren and sign up for fights on the 200th floor of Heavens Arena. Gon wants to test his new powers and fight a man who uses his Nen on toy tops as weapons.

Killua and Gon learn about Nen from Wing, Zushi's teacher. Nen involves using your body's aura while fighting. On their way to register for fights on the 200th floor, they're stopped by Hisoka.

After learning Nen and becoming a true Hunter, Gon returns to Whale Island with Killua. When he arrives, Mito has a box for him. She was told by Ging to give this box to Gon once he became a Hunter.

After landing a punch on Hisoka, Gon returns the tag from the Hunter Exam. Hisoka is ecstatic to see Gon's development and uses his own Nen to attack. Gon is scared, but he recklessly continues to attack.

Gon and Killua begin training in Hatsu, the culmination of everything they've learned about Nen. And finally, Gon challenges Hisoka to return the favor from the Hunter Exam.

Gon has fights against Gido and Riehlvelt coming up. He's still mad about what they did to Zushi. Gon is able to withstand Gido's attacks and overwhelm him in battle.

After two months, Gon and Killua are finally allowed to practice Nen again. That's when Gido, Sadaso, and Riehlvelt appear before them and tell them to fight them in the arena.

Kastro has used his ability to create a clone of himself with Nen to sever Hisoka's arm and take an advantage in the fight. However, despite losing both arms, Hisoka appears to be perfectly calm. Kastro loses his cool and attacks Hisoka.

Gon is determined that Killua has left against his will and is going to find him. He fights Illumi for information and Illumi is about to kill him when Hisoka shows up. Illumi instead tells Gon that Killua is at the Zoldyck family home.

Satotz explains to Gon that Killua failed the final stage. His opponent turns out to be his older brother Illumi in disguise. Illumi questions Killua and determines him unfit to be a normal person.

Hanzo and Gon continue fighting. Hanzo is easily the better fighter, but when Gon won't concede, Hanzo is forced to accept defeat. Hanzo decides he'd rather lose than kill Gon, because he likes his attitude.

Hisoka and Kurapika fight in the first fight of the final stage. Hisoka toys with Kurapika at the beginning, but when Kurapika becomes angry they are on similar levels. This causes Hisoka to force himself to calm down.

Chairman Netero interviews the nine remaining examinees in preparation for the final test. He asks each who they are interested in, and who would they least like to fight out of the nine.

Gon, Leorio and Kurapika become trapped in the cave with Ponzu. Leorio has been poisoned, and Gon gets bit numerous times to retrieve the antidote.

A weakened Gon recuperates by resting and with some help from little animals, Killua is challenged by a group looking for his badge, Leorio's search for badge continues as the last day begins.

Gon finds himself in a tricky situation. He's trying to get to the location of the next phase of the Hunter Exam, but he's lost in the wilderness and running out of time.

Gon and Killua continue their search for Hisoka in the Arena. They know that time is running out, as the tournament is rapidly approaching its final stage. They come across a group of shadowy figures who are also looking for Hisoka.

The fourth stage of the Hunter Exam is a manhunt on Zevil Island. Each examinee must collect 6 points; their own number badge is worth 3, the number badge of their target is worth 3, and any other number badges are worth one point.

The group works together to separate the battleship/hotel from the island before the second wave of the storm hits. Leorio gets stuck on the bottom of the ocean in a diving suit and Gon helps him escape.

The hotel owners leave the examinees stranded on the island. A map is found indicating another island nearby, and part of the group sets out immediately to find it, dying when a storm hits.

The successful examinees are taken by blimp to an island hotel. In order to pay for the rooms, they dive to collect treasure from sunken ships.

The last test to get out of the tower has two paths: one is too long and the other will only allow three of the five to enter. Leorio and Tonpa start fighting to see who will stay, when Gon thinks outside the box.

Leorio goes next. His opponent is Leroute, an attractive woman. He loses ten hours in bet to her so that he can grope her. He then loses the rest of their betting hours to her in a game of rock, paper, scissors.

Majitani feigns unconsciousness in an attempt to run out the clock. Leorio and the leader of the prisoners bet on whether he's faking. Leorio holds the man above a long drop, and Majitani wakes up.

Gon faces the next prisoner, Sedokan, in a match to see who's candle can burn the longest.

The objective of stage 3 is to get down from a tower alive. The group is forced to team up with Tonpa, and their test is to win 3 out of 5 matches against tower prisoners.

Killua stops trying to take the ball from Netero because his killer instincts are surfacing. Anita escapes her handlers and attacks Killua, who comes close to killing Anita, but lets her live because otherwise Gon would get mad at him.

The protagonists and others have passed the second stage, and they fly towards the next stage on a blimp. Anita, a girl who failed the earlier test, sneaks aboard to get revenge on Killua for the death of her father.

While one of the examinees, wrestler Todo, criticizes Menchi and all Gourmet Hunters, Netero, the head examiner and Hunter Association's president, arrives and asks Menchi to give everyone another chance.

The group starts stage 2 of the test, which is to satisfy Gourmet Hunters Buhara and Menchi with their cooking.

Hisoka determines the real examiner by flinging deadly playing cards at each man, reasoning the true Hunter will live, and it's Satotz. Later, he plays at being an examiner and kills many examinees.

Tonpa has placed Leorio and another examinee near hallucinogenic sap. In a dream state, he explains that he wants to be a Hunter to get money so he can become a doctor who doesn't charge for his services. Gon and Killua bond.

Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio reach the first stage of the Hunter Exam, a seemingly endless forced run through a tunnel leading by the examiner named Satotz. They are befriended by a man named Tonpa, , and meet another entrant named Killua.

Gon, Kurapika and Leorio continue on the test, arriving at a cabin in the woods. A husband and wife say they have been attacked by beasts, when a beast shows up and kidnaps the wife.

The ship's captain recommends to go towards a tree on the top of a mountain instead of directly at their goal. Leorio takes the bus and head towards the tree. The bus is a trap, so Leorio abandons it and catches up with Gon and Kurapika.

On the ship to the exam, Gon and Leorio meet Kurapika. The captain asks each for their reason to be a Hunter. Gon wants to find his father, Leorio wants to be rich, and Kurapika wants to be a force for justice.

Gon's aunt Mito gives him the go ahead to take the Hunter Exam after he has successfully passed her test, using a special rod from his father. Gon goes to town to catch a ship to the exam.

Gon decides to take the Hunter Exam and become a professional Hunter, but can only do so after catching the Master of the Swamp to convince his aunt Mito. Despite her feelings after Gon catches it, Mito allows him to begin his adventure.
