Punpun Onodera is a normal 11-year-old boy living in Japan. Hopelessly idealistic and romantic, Punpun begins to see his life take a subtle—though nonetheless startling—turn to the adult when he meets the new girl in his class, Aiko Tanaka. It is then that the quiet boy learns just how fickle maintaining a relationship can be, and the surmounting difficulties of transitioning from a naïve boyhood to a convoluted adulthood. When his father assaults his mother one night, Punpun realizes another thing: those whom he looked up to were not as impressive as he once thought.

As his problems increase, Punpun's once shy demeanor turns into voluntary reclusiveness. Rather than curing him of his problems and conflicting emotions, this merely intensifies them, sending him down the dark path of maturity in this grim coming-of-age saga.

You’ll probably regret reading this

Oyasumi Punpun is a horrible story—not in the scope of quality, but in regards to the general experience of life shown by Inio Asano through these characters. This story does not shy away from exploring the most disgusting aspects of the mosaic-like human psyche, and how these parts can come to be. It is thoroughly realistic despite its dark humor and at times nonsensical, but meaningful story telling. Be warned, it’s not an easy read.

Dark, deep and lonely

This is a slow story. If you want action, then you are wrong here. If you want a happy read, then you are wrong here. This is a depressing slow burn. Each character even the side characters are deep and introspective. Most characters are so normal that they are just not normal. Every once in a while there are surrealist aspects like Pegasus and “God”. The art is beautiful and I love how punpun evolves as he evolves emotionally. worst mistake of my life

genuinely one of the best manga ive ever read but i ended up questioning my entire existence 10/10 i wish i could read this for the first time again
