Alexandra Arvan, daughter of a count, agrees to marry Pavel Volkov, son of the Grand Duke, in order to pay off her family's debt. Suffering from an incurable disease, Pavel is notorious for his foul mouth and hot temper. Alexandra feels pity towards her young husband and treats him with kindness and care, which may help save him from his terminal illness as well as from his deep despair.
