However, its true nature was a "meritocracy" where only a select few of the most academically successful students received favorable treatment.

Ayanokoji and the others, who belong to Class D, known as the "last refuge for failures," somehow managed to advance to the second year.
But their joy was short-lived, as they were at the mercy of the first-year students in a special exam held soon after the new school year began.
