Time is the Edo period, around the time of the 8th shogun Yoshimune. Rumors spread throughout Edo that the ghost of the deceased mistress of Hatamoto's mansion in Bancho appears in the well. Edward Adams, who has come to Japan to train in ninjutsu, hears the rumors and heads to the mansion with his fellow consort Haieda.
