Exhausted by her life as an overworked office worker, a young woman suffers an accident and awakens in a strange new world. The food and civilization seem almost identical to what she remembers, but its inhabitants certainly aren't: this is a world populated by humanoid beings with bizarre, inhuman heads. Even stranger, humans who appear in this world aren't treated as people at all. With no rights of their own, they're kept as rare and exotic pets. Unable to return home, the woman becomes “Ningen-chan,” the pet of Raz, a frightening-looking but surprisingly gentle and considerate Variant Head.

As Ningen-chan settles into her unusual new life, she finds herself increasingly drawn to her kindhearted owner, and Raz has developed feelings for her as well. Yet neither knows how to bridge the enormous divide between their species, not to mention the uncomfortable relationship of “owner” and “pet” that brought them together. In a world where their love shouldn't be possible, a lonely former office worker and her unusual new companion slowly grow closer in a sweet, slightly spicy interspecies romance.
