Soko no Nai Machi
Soko no Nai Machi
Mystery, Supernatural, Full Color
In 1956, shortly after his debut, Umezu Kazuo published this mystery novel as a new book from Osaka publisher Mishima Shobo. It was the first in a series of rental books starring the boy detective Misaki Ichiro. Even during the heyday of hard-boiled manga, the story is already overflowing with the supernatural, and the seeds of the author's later works can be seen. Misaki Ichiro appears unexpectedly in a rainy town, where he meets a strange old man known as the town's lord. The old man has taken out a photograph Ichiro had been carrying, and there is something spider-like in the photograph... \*The e-book version does not include the "Forest Brothers and Sisters" and "Bottomless Town" Readers.

The Siblings in the Forest
The Siblings in the Forest
Adventure, Full Color, Animals
This book was a collaboration between Umezu Kazuo, who was in his second year of junior high school at the time, and Mizutani Takeko, a girls' manga artist living in Kyoto, and was Umezu's debut work. Umezu drew the first and second halves, while Mizutani drew the middle. Umezu and Mizutani were members of a manga circle called the "Kaiman Club," and Umezu asked them to collaborate. The original work is the Grimm fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel," but the adaptations are reminiscent of Umezu, who would later become a master of horror. The detailed depictions of the backgrounds and other works are astonishing, demonstrating the extraordinary artistic ability of this precocious genius. \*The e-book version does not include the "Readers for 'Brother and Sister in the Forest' and 'Bottomless Town'."
