A young boy gets saved from drowning by a mermaid but according to mermaid law, if a human sees a mermaid's true form, both are to be executed. The only solution to the problem is for him to marry her and become part of the mermaid family.

Nagi Sakuragi, a middle school girl living in Tokyo, Japan, discovers in her mother's notebook that the nest of the Japanese swallow was the bird her mother had been searching for when she went missing eight years ago. The notebook mentions an island in the sea where the Japanese swallows come, and it is also the island where her mother disappeared. Nagi decides to go to the island during her summer vacation. She manages to deceive her father by asking her best friend, Sacchi, to pretend to be her and sets off for the island in a Cessna, but there is no sign of the island. Just as her fuel is running out, a Japanese swallow appears and guides her, and the island suddenly emerges from the sea. It is the "Island of the Gods (Canaan)," densely covered with trees hundreds of years old, and inhabited by pteranodons and monsters that breathe fire and fly faster than airplanes. As Nagi is attacked by a monster and nearly dies, a mysterious boy named Magi, who calls her a "demon," and a flying turtle named Pochi appear and help her rest on the wing of her Cessna. At first, Magi intended to watch from a distance as Nagi was devoured, but because their names were similar, he found it amusing and decided to fight the monster to save Nagi, defeating it with tools called artifacts. Thus began Nagi's extraordinary summer vacation on the "Island of the Gods (Canaan)."

Zushio was to be king and promised his sister that he would become king (on penalty of death). Unfortunately for him, his empire was overthrown and now he's a wanted man. A girl has the misfortune of running into Prince Zushio and becomes tangled in his plight. Adding to her misfortune, Zushio is not quite right in the head, but hey, at least he seems to be immortal.
