The stories depict Akino sampling new foods, meeting a friend's cat, struggling with English, and navigating life between two cultures – a familiar challenge for many of our students.

Eiko is 29 years old. Who should she be with? Where should she live? It's about time she answers these questions. Although, she should, she won't (she doesn't want to!)... "Ah, not like that," or "Not this either," Eiko is always fretting. These burdens in her daily life frame the story for "A-ko-san no Koibito."

This collection of three stories by Akino Kondoh presents some of the cartoonist and animator's best known work for Ax, Japan's premier venue for alternative manga, and a recent story about life in New York City. Quiet stories of contemplation, mixed with the surreal strangeness just beyond conscious thought: pushing events into the background until you forget what they were, a girl feeling a strange presence as she goes to sleep, and losing part of yourself in preparing for someone's return.

Kondo Akino, who is also active as a contemporary artist and manga artist, and whose works include "Ms. A-san's Lover" vol. 1-5 (continued by KADOKAWA) and "Thinking in New York" vol. 1-2 (continued by Akishobo), has released her first collection of essays in a new edition at a more affordable price. The book contains 58 essays, including "Not in the Sky and Not at the Bottom of the Hole," a new work drawn especially for the new edition, as well as 58 illustrations and two manga. Itsumo no Hanashi is a collection of 20 shorts stories from about the last decade (1998-2008) by Kondoh, which range from somewhat light-hearted slice of life-ish stories about getting letters from old classmates (Itsumo no Hanashi) to seemingly drug-induced dream stories about talking to your legs and furniture (Kotatsu no Mawari de).
