16-year-old Ayumu Yukimura's parents died in a traffic accident five years ago, and his passion for shogi, which he used to compete with his childhood friend Keiko Kitayama until six years ago, has waned. He moved away from his relatives' house and transferred to the high school in his hometown where he used to spend time with his parents and Keiko. There, as per the promise they made when they parted ways when he was young, he happens to meet Keiko, who is active as a third-dan member of the encouragement group.
