The shinden (temple knights) are held responsible with the duty of fighting demons for the sake of the holy maiden, who's the symbol of the church. The holy maiden, unique to this country, exists to help save people from a mysterious illness that happens around the time of a new moon. Due to this, many people became followers \[of the church]. Murray, a shinden, was brought up under the holy maiden's guidance, but, what kind of mysterious living is it if he supports the holy maiden, involuntarily? Naru inherited a temple from his father, but the temple hardly gets any visitors and is beginning to fall down. Naru suspects that there is a demon at the temple and tries to plan a way to get rid of it. When Yomi, an exorcist, arrives at the temple, while looking for another shrine, Naru gets the idea to convince Yomi that his temple is the shrine that Yomi is looking for.

The war between the two clans intensifies. Most of the Genji (Minamoto Clan) have fallen, and were taken as captives. Among them was the young Yoritomo, a surviving successor of the Minamoto Clan. Yoritomo was pardoned by the head of the Taira Clan and was exiled to Hirugakojima, a small island in the Izu province. Yoritomo lived a peaceful and contented life in exile and never once thought of taking revenge. One day, a monk was sent to the same island, supposedly banished for insolence towards the Emperor. Incidentally, this ill-mannered monk called Mongaku is Yoritomo's acquaintance. Mongaku meets Yoritomo and tries to convince him that the time has come to take revenge on the Taira. However, Yoritomo shuns Mongaku’s words….
