Set ten years after the death of the notorious crime lord Geese Howard, the city of South Town has become more peaceful. Now, the stage is in the neighboring city of Second South Town. A new fighting tournament called "King of Fighters: Maximum Mayhem" starts in the area, and several characters related with the fighters from the old era of King of Fighters tournaments participate within it.

The King of Fighters RX manhua series is divided in three parts: The Beginning of NESTS EPISODE (4 volumes, 25 chapters); NESTS EPISODE PROJECT'00 (2 volumes, 29 chapters); The End of NESTS EPISODE (1 volume, 14 chapters). RX covers the entire NESTS chapter with the first two volumes primarily focusing on the Zero Project. Kula and both forms of Zero are shown somewhat earlier than their premiere in the series. Most events remain relatively the same until the final volume.
