The story begins when Tanaka Futaro, who had been living in seclusion in the countryside of Nagano, comes to Tokyo. He is a genius pickpocket and a well-known thief in the underworld. After suffering a painful betrayal by his partner in a certain incident, Futaro had returned to an honest life, but he makes a comeback. He ends up staying with Hirai Heikichi, a fence who used to work with him, and begins to assess the criminals who gather at Hirai's coffee shop , "night," which is his ostensible business.
