Taniguchi Jiro

After an earthquake, a mysterious forest appears in an area close to the 10 year old protagonist's new home. This is Jiro Taniguchi's last work before his death. It's unfinished, originally intended to be 3-5 volumes. The manga was made for a French audience, in full color, with a simultaneous release in French and Japanese.

When Louis Vuitton decided to produce a series of deluxe travel books for the new century they invited only hand picked artists from around the world and placed them in settings unfamiliar to the artists to bring this vision to life. For one of the world’s most visited and romantic cities, Venice, they chose Jiro Taniguchi to glorify this magnificent city with his beautifully painted scenes. Being Taniguchi he wove a storyline around the wide open vistas, narrow canals and crowded piazzas of ‘La Serenissima’. . .

After a group trip to Europe, a Japanese artist stops in Paris alone, intent on visiting the museums of the capital. But, bedridden in his hotel room with fever, he faces the absolute solitude of one suffering in a foreign land, deprived of any immediate or familiar recourse. When the fever breaks somewhat, he sets out on his visit and promptly gets lost in the crowded halls of the Louvre. Very soon, he discovers many unsuspected facets to this world in a museum in a journey oscillating between feverish hallucination and reality, actually able to speak with famous painters from various periods of history, led to crossroads between human and personal history by... the Guardians of the Louvre.

During the Interwar Period (1925-1932), Tomoji lives in the Japanese countryside while Fumiaki works as a photographer in Tokyo. One day, they meet… This story is inspired by real characters who founded later a branch of Buddhism.

Inspired by an historical figure, Tadataka Ino (1745 – 1818), Taniguchi invites us to join this unnamed but appealing and picturesque figure as he strolls through the various districts of Edo, the ancient Tokyo, with its thousand little pleasures. Now retired from business he surveys, measures, draws and takes notes whilst giving free rein to his taste for simple poetry and his inexhaustible capacity for wonder.

Seventeen authors (nine from France or French-speaking countries, eight from Japan) brought together in the same book, a succession of freely created short stories about the same universe: Japan. The French, of course, journeyed to Japan for the occasion. Each cartoonist was sent for two weeks to a different city in the archipelago (Joann Sfar in Tôkyô, Emmanuel Guibert in Kyôto, Nicolas de Crécy in Nagoya, etc.) to bring back an original creation. The Japanese tell us about their district, the city where they live or where they originally come from (Kazuichi Hanawa's story being about the northern island of Hokkaido, Jiro Taniguchi's about the town of Tottori, etc.) The result is often inspired, always surprising: Japan through new eyes. "Japan" will appear simultaneously in French, Japanese, Spanish, Italian and English. Along with "A Patch Of Dreams" by Hideji Oda, it is the first step in a series of international creations with left-to-right reading direction, created for us by some of the best European and Japanese comic book artists. Seton is the story of Ernest Thompson Seton (1860-1946), a famous American writer and naturalist.

Summer. Around Tokyo. A terrible accident between a motorcyclist and a van. Ten days later, the van's driver, Kazuhiro Kubota, 42 years old, dies. At the same moment, though, the motorcyclist, Takuya Onodera, 17 years old, begins showing signs of life. In just a few days, he regained consciousness: a true miracle. Our Mountains Set in 1920s Japan, the story follows an elderly hunter in his attempts to take vengeance on the enormous bear that killed his son. Kaiyose-Jima A nostalgic tale in which a boy is sent to spend the summer with relatives on the coast after his mother is taken ill. Shôkarô A mangaka looks back on the strange apartment building he lived in when he first came to Tokyo as an aspiring artist and the unusual people he met there. Return To The Sea The tale of a marine biologist working on the coast of Alaska who becomes obsessed with an elderly bowhead whale and the Inuit tales of a whale cemetery. Toudo no Tabibito was published in English as The Ice Wanderer and Other Stories by Ponent Mon / Fanfare on January 1, 2010. It was also published in Polish as Wędrowiec z tundry by Hanami.

Shiga, a mountaineer, leaves his isolated lodge and returns to Tokyo in order to track down Megumi - the missing daughter of Tatsuko (Shiga's deceased best friend) and Yoriko (whom Shiga has secretly been in love with since before Tatsuko died). Shiga's investigation takes him into the world of "compensated dating" and disaffected teens and what he discovers there suggests that Megumi may have been abducted by a paedophile with a great deal of power and influence. In order to save the girl and regain the self-respect he lost when his best friend died, Shiga must break through the wall of silence and do what the police dare not.

Ao no Senshi depicts the fate of an atypical boxer. His name is Reggae, he's boxing in lightweight division. His record: 12 wins per knockout for 20 losses by as many knockouts. However, the specialists are impressed by the devastating punch of this mute fighter, which contributes to his myth. But when his path cross the one of a promoter that see in him a crownless king, his life will lead him on the tortuous path to the championship belt.

Taku Ryumon is a detective who lives on the mountains immersed in nature with his loyal hunting dog Joe. But one day a person pay a visit to him, asking a favour.

Tsukiko, thirty-eight, works in an office and lives alone. One night, she happens to meet one of her former high school teachers, “Sensei” in a local bar. Tsukiko had only ever called him “Sensei” (“Teacher”). He is thirty years her senior, retired, and presumably a widower. Their relationship–traced by Kawakami’s gentle hints at the changing seasons–develops from a perfunctory acknowledgment of each other as they eat and drink alone at the bar, to an enjoyable sense of companionship, and finally into a deeply sentimental love affair. As Tsukiko and Sensei grow to know and love one another, time’s passing comes across through the seasons and the food and beverages they consume together. From warm sake to chilled beer, from the buds on the trees to the blooming of the cherry blossoms, the reader is enveloped by a keen sense of pathos and both characters’ keen loneliness.

Through the ordinary small events of his professional and personal life, a forty-year-old man lets himself go on impromptu escapades at random along the paths that the big city offers. This vagrant impulse soon takes on the appearance of a sentimental journey, punctuated by images of the walker's youth.

Icaro is the adventure of a young man, Icaro, with the ability to fly and a young woman, Yukiko, who risks her life – and more – to help Icaro achieve his dream. It capitalizes on Taniguchi's ability to depict a vast and oppressive advanced science laboratory that has made Icaro its guinea pig and will use all its resources to keep him imprisoned for study.

Manga doesn't get much more noir than this. Benkei is just another expatriate Japanese arist living in the Big Apple. Or so it appears. As there "diabolical hard-boiled stories" show, surfaces aren't always what they seem. Flashbacks delve into sordid, secret past lives, and old scored, long festering, emerge without warning, asking to be settled. And Benkei's secret? Maybe it's just that he's the only artist in town who isn't having fantasies of being a hitman-for-hire. He is one.

This manga simply describes how Gorou Inogashira, the main character, chooses and takes a meal. Unlike other gourmet manga, Gorou likes to eat at cheap restaurants and no trivia on cuisine is given. The authors are trying to depict the essentials of the act of "eating" by Gorou's monologue, which comprises most of the lines of this manga.

From the pages of history comes the legend of the Samurai Jubei and the book he was pledged to protect. Now that book has been stolen and Jubei must retrieve it before Japan descends into bloody civil war.

Boxing depicted in this work is not only on the glamorous side, but also on the dark side that is the underworld.

A hard-boiled rock music manga that depicts the rock vocalist Odyssey returning to Japan from the United States. Odyssey spends his days wandering around with the former members who are hoping for a band reunion. However, driven by his inner impulse, he picks up the guitar again and resumes band activities.

Story revolves around a serenade, which is made up of three misfits, a beautiful stripper Hoshiko, pure and loving Joe and money lover Rei. They uncover a morphine smuggling route by mistake. Now a dangerous adventure awaits them...
