The way the story villainizes and antagonizes the childhood friend—who didn’t really do anything to deserve such extreme treatment just leaves a bad taste. It turns what could have been a compelling love story into something that feels mean-spirited and poorly thought out. The cop out being that much fate is just poorly done in general.
