Igarashi Daisuke

There exists an old rumor relating to cats within the ancient capital of Kamakura... that if you go to the "Bakeneko Club", located somewhere in Kamakura, you can meet cats that have gone missing. Even today, people wander into "Kamakura Neko Club", where Maya and Gakuto work, relying on this rumor.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Louvre's comic collection, a series of international exhibitions has been scheduled. The Taipei Montue Museum, followed by the Tainan Cultural Center, inaugurated the Taiwanese part of this major retrospective by exhibiting more than two hundred original plates, preparatory drawings and video installations. Then, between August 2016 and September 2017, the exhibition follows a traveling tour through Japan, starting with the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Tokyo. At each stage of the exhibition, Taiwanese and then Japanese artists were invited to participate in this project. It is their work that we reproduce here. A Japanese girl named Nana and Nawan Namugyaru, a man who has lost his memory, gets involved in the movement to stop those using black magic from resurrecting the ancient power and destroying Earth. The heroine, Ruka, who was banned from taking part in the activities of her club during the summer vacation, meets a strange boy named Umi. She is fascinated by Umi, who she sees swimming freely in an aquarium, and finds out that he, along with Sora, was raised by a dugong. At that time a meteorite fell into the sea and all the fish disappeared from the world. The mystery of the sea deepens and the story spreads to encompass the life of the earth. Official English

Seventeen authors (nine from France or French-speaking countries, eight from Japan) brought together in the same book, a succession of freely created short stories about the same universe: Japan. The French, of course, journeyed to Japan for the occasion. Each cartoonist was sent for two weeks to a different city in the archipelago (Joann Sfar in Tôkyô, Emmanuel Guibert in Kyôto, Nicolas de Crécy in Nagoya, etc.) to bring back an original creation. The Japanese tell us about their district, the city where they live or where they originally come from (Kazuichi Hanawa's story being about the northern island of Hokkaido, Jiro Taniguchi's about the town of Tottori, etc.) The result is often inspired, always surprising: Japan through new eyes. "Japan" will appear simultaneously in French, Japanese, Spanish, Italian and English. Along with "A Patch Of Dreams" by Hideji Oda, it is the first step in a series of international creations with left-to-right reading direction, created for us by some of the best European and Japanese comic book artists. The daily life of Ichiko, a young woman who lives alone near a small village called Komori (lit., "Little Forest"). Each chapter features a dish or meal scavenged from the forests and mountains around Ichiko's home or harvested from fields she cultivates herself. While there are no wild flights of fancy as in Witches or Hanashippanashi, the organic artwork and majesty of nature featured within this short series taps into that same source of magic.
